Fitness: Connecting Google Health/Fitbit

Fitness activity can help create a stronger sense of progress, motivation, and connection throughout a fundraising campaign. For supporters taking part in fitness challenges, the ability to automatically track and share their activity can help keep fundraising pages active, engaging, and up to date over time.

Connecting Google Health/Fitbit with Funraisin allows supporters to sync fitness activity directly to their fundraising pages, reducing manual updates and making progress visible throughout the campaign journey.

This article explains how to connect Google Health/Fitbit with Funraisin, including updating existing Fitbit integrations, creating the required credentials, and testing the connection.

What is Google Health/Fitbit?

Google Health/Fitbit is a fitness-tracking platform that allows users to record and monitor activities such as walking, running, cycling, workouts, and other fitness activities.

As Google has recently decided to phase out Fitbit as a standalone entity, it is recommended that charities establish a connection with Google Health, where possible.

Activity is tracked through Google/Fitbit wearable devices and synced to the Google Health/Fitbit app, where users can view activity history, monitor progress over time, and manage connected fitness applications.

How Google Health/Fitbit works with Funraisin

When connected, Google Health/Fitbit automatically syncs activity data to a fundraiser’s profile within Funraisin.

This may include metrics such as:

  • Distance
  • Duration
  • Steps
  • Workout activity

This activity is displayed on the fundraiser’s page, allowing supporters to see progress throughout the campaign.

Activity also contributes to the fundraiser’s overall fitness stats and can be reflected across fitness features such as progress tracking and leaderboards.

Once connected, activity syncs automatically from Google Health/Fitbit, eliminating the need for manual updates and helping fundraising pages stay current and accurately reflect supporter progress.

Tip! Participants using Google Health/Fitbit should start and save an activity to ensure it syncs to Funraisin. If no activity is logged, cumulative activity may not sync until the end of the day. If activity is not syncing as expected, try syncing both the Google/Fitbit device and the Google Health/Fitbit app on the participant's smartphone.

Important Fitbit updates for existing connections

Fitbit has migrated its developer platform to Google Health as part of Google's ongoing consolidation of its health and fitness services.

As a result, existing Fitbit integrations within Funraisin will need to be updated with new Google Health credentials to continue syncing activity data.

If your platform already has Fitbit enabled, we recommend updating your credentials as soon as possible to avoid any interruption to activity syncing.

Actions required for existing Fitbit connections

To ensure supporters can continue syncing Fitbit activity to your Funraisin platform, you'll need to update your existing Fitbit integration to use Google Health credentials.

This process involves:

  • Creating a Google Health project
  • Generating a new Client ID and Client Secret
  • Granting access to Google Health
  • Updating your Fitbit settings within Funraisin

Although your existing integration may continue working temporarily, we recommend completing these steps as soon as possible to avoid any interruption to activity syncing.

The sections below walk through the full process.

New Google Health/Fitbit integrations

If you're connecting Google Health/Fitbit to Funraisin for the first time, you'll need to create a Google Health project and generate the credentials required to connect the integration.

This process involves:

  • Creating a Google Health project
  • Generating a new Client ID and Client Secret
  • Granting access to Google Health
  • Updating your Fitbit settings within Funraisin

The sections below walk through the full setup process.

Setting up Fitbit with Google Health

Whether you're connecting Fitbit for the first time or updating an existing integration, you'll need to create a Google Health project and generate the credentials required to connect Fitbit with Funraisin.

Creating a Google Cloud Project

Before Fitbit can be connected to Funraisin, you'll need to create a Google Cloud Project and enable the Google Health API. This project provides the credentials required to securely connect Google Health and Funraisin.

To create a Google Health project:

1
Navigate to the Google Cloud Console and sign in with your Google Account: https://console.cloud.google.com/
2
Click the Project Picker and select Create Project.

Tip! We recommend using a project name that clearly identifies its purpose, such as "[Charity Name] Fitness Integration" or "[Platform Name] Fitbit Connection".

3
Create the project and select it from the Project Picker.
4
Take note of the Project ID. You'll need this later when configuring Fitbit within Funraisin.
5
Search for Google Health API and click Enable.

Once enabled, the Google Health API will be available within your project, and you can continue configuring the credentials required for the Fitbit integration.

For more information, see Google's support guide: Create a Google Cloud project.

Generating a Client ID and Client Secret

A Client ID and Client Secret allow Funraisin to securely connect to Google Health and access Fitbit activity data.

To generate a Client ID and Client Secret:

1
Within your Google Health project, navigate to APIs & Services > Credentials.
2
Click Create Credentials and select OAuth client ID.

Tip! If this is your first time creating an OAuth client ID, you'll be prompted to configure a consent screen. Follow the setup process provided by Google and ensure the audience is set to External.

3
When creating the OAuth client ID, select Web application as the application type.
4
Under Authorized redirect URIs, enter your full Funraisin platform URL followed by /login/fitbit. For example: https://www.yourcause.org/login/fitbit

Tip! Be sure to include the full URL, including the https:// prefix.

5
Click Create.
6
Copy and save your Client ID and Client Secret.

Important Your Client Secret will only be displayed once. We recommend downloading the JSON file and storing it securely. If the Client Secret is lost, you'll need to generate a new one.

For more information, see Google's support guide: Create OAuth client credentials.

Giving your Client ID access to Google Health

Before Google Health/Fitbit can connect to Funraisin, you'll need to grant your Client ID permission to access Google Health activity data.

To grant access:

1
Within your Google Health project, navigate to Data Access.
2
Click Add or Remove Scopes.
3
Search for Google Health API.
4
Enable the following scope: .../auth/googlehealth.activity_and_fitness.readonly

Tip! Depending on your Google account and project configuration, Google may require additional verification before the application can be published or used more broadly. Follow any prompts provided by Google during the setup process.

5
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Update.

Adding Google Health credentials to Funraisin

Once you've created your Google Health project and generated your credentials, you'll need to add them to Funraisin to complete the Fitbit integration.

To add your Google Health credentials:

1
Within Funraisin, navigate to Admin > Platform Setup > General Setup > App Settings.
2
Select the Fitness tab.
3
Scroll to the Fitbit section.
4
Enter the following details:
  • Client ID: Enter the Client ID generated in Google Health.
  • Client Secret: Enter the Client Secret generated in Google Health.
  • Project ID: Enter the Google Health Project ID created earlier.
5
Click Save.

Once saved, Fitbit will be available for fundraisers to connect within events that have Fitness Activity enabled.

Testing the Google Health/Fitbit integration

Once your Google Health credentials have been added to Funraisin, we recommend completing a test to ensure the integration is working successfully.

1
Log in as a fundraiser in an event with Fitness Activity enabled.

Tip! We recommend using a test fundraiser account where possible.

2
Navigate to the My Fitness Activity tab.
3
Click the Fitbit icon to begin connecting the account.
4
Follow the Fitbit connection flow to authorize the integration.
5
Complete a test activity and ensure it syncs to the fundraiser profile.
6
If the connection is successful, the fundraiser dashboard will display the connected Fitbit account and synced fitness activity.
