An Introduction to live streaming

As social media channels play more and more of a profound aspect in our lives, the means that we use to interact with eachother continues to evolve over time. One of the biggest social media trends of 2019 is the rise to mainstream acceptance of live video streaming to friends, family and even fans.

While live video gaming continues to be the most common type of live streaming, content creators continue to innovate the types of live streams they share - this includes everything from cooking classes, live music performances or even simply sharing their thougts while out for a walk.

Live streaming also opens up many creative options to assist with online fundraising challenges. Funraisin has recently added the ability to share live streaming videos directly from your fundraising profile pages. So if you are participating in a running event, you can now live stream during your run, take a break and share your story for why you are fundraising or just check in with your supporters between run.

Getting started with live streaming is easier then your may imagine. With only a smart phone and an account with a live streaming service such as Twitch.tv you can get started in a matter of minutes.

How to start live streaming straight from your fundraising profile page

1) Choose an online straming service such as https://www.twitch.tv/ and create an account (don't forget to write down your username)

2) Download the service's streaming application to your smart phone or desktop (for example from https://www.twitch.tv/downloads)

3) Log in to your Funraisin account and select "Edit my page" from the dropdown menu

4) Find the section called "Add live streaming", select your service and enter your username (just like the image below)

Now visit your fundraising profile page and you will see your streaming video is ready to go!

Adding live streaming video to your fundraising creates a great opportunity to reach out to your supporters and invite them to share in your challenge with you. It also gives you a chance to thank supporters and share a daily recount of how your fundraising journey is progressing.

There really is no limit to how you can choose to engage with your supporters and foster a shared feeling of taking part in a challenge together.

Advanced live video streaming options

As with most types of technology, you can choose how much time you would like to invest in your streaming set up.

Above we discussed the fastest way to get a live stream started, but with a little more reading you can explore more features that come with a more detailed set up.

Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) is an open source and cross-platform tool used by many to add enhanced features to a stream such as embedded comments, custom backgrounds and video-in-video broiadcasting.

You can download OBS directly from the project website: http://obsproject.com/download
